Burj Al Arab, Al Fujairah finish on top

DUBAI — Forty traditional boats participated in the first heat of the much-awaited rowing race of the season.

Held in two rounds at the Dubai Creek on Friday, 20 boats reached the finish buoys opposite the Kuwaiti Consulate from the start line set at the Al Boom Tourist Village.

Muscle power was evident in Al Fujairah, skippered by Salim Obeid Al Zahmi, in the first round and by Saif Saeed Al Zaabi who led his crew in Burj Al Arab in the second round placing both at first position.

Jubilation reverberated on the banks of the Creek with spectators cheering the winners.

Al Zahab 1, led by Ahmed Ebrahim Rashid, and Al Mutala’a, skippered by Saif Khalaf Al Matari, secured second position in the first and second rounds respectively followed closely by Henyam and Al Za’eem in the third position respectively.

The second heat will take place during the DSF at the Creek on January 28.
