DUBAI — The Ministry of Social Affairs announced the formation of the Emirates Human Rights Society in a ministerial decree. Mariam Mohammed Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of Social Affairs, issued the decree in this regard.

The society will be based in Abu Dhabi and will have jurisdiction over the entire UAE. It will realise its objectives in accordance with the UAE constitution and the country's rules and regulations. The Federal Law No. 6 of 1974 and its amendments in Law No, 20 of 1981 with regard to non-profitable societies will govern the functioning of the society.

The society will uphold the human rights of people in the country, including the rights of resident non-citizens, to ensure an environment free from fear and injustice.

The society will implement socio-economic and political justice through independent legislative and judicial institutions. Besides, it will also try to spread awareness among the public about human rights and civil liberties.

The society will maintain equality between members of the society and fight discrimination on the basis of religious, ideological, racial, and ethnic differences. It will protect the rights of detainees, prisoners, people with special needs, and victims of natural disasters and other tragedies. The body will strive to provide all these groups the opportunity lead an honourable life.

The society rejects any type of violence and use of power and calls for democratic dialogue based on extending full respect to the other opinion. The society will cooperate with relevant authorities to enhance the implementation of the principles of justice away from arbitration, force and fear.

The society in coordination with humanitarian aid and relief organisations will work to support people who need help. It will prepare reports about the status of political and opinion prisoners and submit them to the concerned authorities.

The society allows three types of memberships: working, affiliate, and honourary memberships. The membership of the society is open to all UAE nationals who are above 18 years, provided the applicant's criminal record is spotless.
