Call to merge two agencies with environment ministry

ABU DHABI — Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi, has called for merging the General Secretariat of the UAE Municipalities and the Federal Environmental Agency (FEA) with the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, which was created in the recent cabinet formation.

“It is time to create such a ministry, the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, as we lack the legislation that controls the rationalisation of consumption of water, although the Ministry of Agriculture did a lot of effort towards this aspect,” he told Khaleej Times yesterday.

Mansouri underlined the need to adopt studied decisions, which organise the utilisation of water as it is considered one of the main problems we face.

“Existence of such a ministry like the Ministry of Environment will unify and activate all efforts and cooperation between the official bodies,” he said.

The difference in the viewpoints did hinder a solution to the issues related to domestic environment, he confirmed.

“The new Ministry of Environment should have more power to implement its policies towards our environment and using water,” he pointed out.

Commenting on the spread of the outbreak of bird flu virus, Mansouri suggested that they coordinate with the Food and Agriculture Organisation, (FAO), to defuse the situation and asserted that they will not declare any case infected till they make sure of such infection by the laboratory analysis.

“The situation now seems to be dangerous regarding the spread of this virus in many countries in the world, but we are still doing medical checks and surveys,” he said.

“We’ve contacted a company that manufactures incinerators to provide us with two as quickly as possible and we expect to have them next month,” he said.
