DUBAI — A 47-storey under-construction building near Dubai Internet City caught fire yesterday afternoon, causing panic among workers and public, while causing huge losses.

However, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. The building is located in Tecom Investments 'B' site.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, Brigadier General Rashid Thani Rashid Al Matrooshi, Director General of Dubai Civil Defence, told Khaleej Times.

Ambulances, firefighters and police teams rushed to the spot soon after the fire was reported. Paramedics were seen on the spot waiting to handle any emergency situation.

Matrooshi said the fire broke out atop the building at around 2pm. "Our initial objective was to ensure that nobody is trapped in the building," Matrooshi said, adding that since fire erupted atop, it was not easy for the firefighters to reach the spot.

"We'll investigate whether all safety measures were in place at the building," pointed out Matrooshi, while adding that the firefighting operation could take several hours.

Meanwhile, some of the labourers working in the building said they had a lucky escape as most of them were out of the building for lunch when the fire erupted.

"Initially we feared some of our colleagues might have been trapped inside. When we saw thick black smoke billowing out of the building we started panicking," said Jawahar Alam, a worker.

Rasool Al Salam, another worker who was sleeping on the 24th floor of the building when the fire erupted, said, "It was one of the scariest moments of my life. I rushed down and ran out of the building."

When contacted, Tecom officials said they would initiate an investigation into the incident.

Mohammed Al Mulla, Executive Director, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Dubai Media City, said that Tecom officials were informed about the incident soon after the fire erupted.

According to insurance experts, the losses could touch several millions of dirhams.
