By Ahmed Abdul Aziz

27 June 2007
ABU DHABI — On the occasion of International Anti-Narcotics Day yesterday, Abu Dhabi Police organised an exhibition and awareness programmes at various locations in the emirate.

The main venue was Marina Mall where Major-General Saeed Obaid Al Mazroui, Deputy Commander of Abu Dhabi Police, inaugurated the event.

As part of the event, specially-designed anti-drugs campaign catalogues and posters were displayed and distributed among various segments of the society

SMSs highlighting anti-drug messages also were sent to a lot of people. The SMSs targeted schoolchildren, parents, drivers and labourers. Many organisations in the capital participated in the campaign along with various departments of Abu Dhabi Police.

Major-General Al Mazroui said the sustained efforts by the police and intensive application of technology had made smuggling of drugs into the country nearly impossible.

He also honoured those who had made excellent contribution to spreading anti-narcotics awareness.

Brigadier Dr Shaikh Saeed bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Deputy Inspector-General in the Ministry of Interior (MoI), who was present on the occasion, said, “The International Anti-Narcotics Day is a very important occasion to remind the society of the dangers of the drugs that kill youth who are the backbone of the societies. We must stop this enemy (the drugs) to save our young people and everyone who lives here in the UAE.”
