Official cautions students against unaccredited educational institutions

ABU DHABI — Students in the UAE must check before joining any college or university whether the educational institutes they intend to enrol in are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, says Saif Rashed Al Mazroui, Assistant Under-secretary of Scientific Research and Certificate Equivalent in the ministry.

According to Al Mazroui, if students have certificates from foreign universities outside the UAE, they must get them attested by the UAE foreign ministry and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research will verify their authenticity.

As for universities within the UAE, he says the common mistake that students usually make is that they join educational institutes without checking whether or not they are accredited by the ministry.

Also, some students opt for learning modes that are not recognised such as electronic learning, he adds.

“There's no excuse for joining non-accredited universities. These universities are generally not following high standards and their staff members are not qualified to teach,” says Al Mazroui.
