Top Cyclists for GCC Tour

4 November 2009
DUBAI — Some of the region’s top cyclists will line up for a grueling 965-kilometre GCC Cycling Tour, which kicks off in Oman on Wednesday.

The 11-day event starts with a 7.5-kilometre prologue to be followed on Thursday with a 100km race. The championship moves to UAE on Friday where the riders will battle for supremacy in a 110-kilometre road race in Diba Fujeirah.  The next leg of the event, a 100kilometre race, will also be hosted by UAE in Al Ain before the championship moves to Qatar for the fifth and sixth stages while Saudi Arabia hosts the seventh and eighth legs. The championship concludes in Bahrain where the island state organises the ninth and tenth stages.

Doha Team won the inaugural championship held last year which started in Bahrain and ended in UAE. But UAE missed the chance to win the championship when some of the top its cyclists were involved in a crash in the early stages of the final race. The new national coach, Rene Schmidt, is hopeful things would be different this time. He said the recent Arab Cycling Championship in Doha where UAE won two gold medals, a silver and two bronze, had been a good preparation for the team. He has named ten cyclists, which he says is a blend of experience and youth.
