Ramadan Tennis: Fifth Seed Sabri and Ghareb Stunned

dubai —Fifth seed Sherif Sabri and seven seeded Mohammed Ghareb of Kuwait crashed out in the first round of the men’s Super Singles tennis tournament of the 12th Abu Dhabi Ramadan Games at the Armed Forces Officers’ Club on Tuesday night.

Sabri, ranked 480 in the world, was beaten by Algeria’s Quassil Hared 6-2, 6-4. Quassil stamped his authority on the match very early with his strong attacking play from the baseline to take the opening set with ease. Though Sabri found his rhythm in the second set, taking the initiative on a few occasions, Hared kept the same pace to win the set 6-4 and the match.

Hared meets Johan Ortegren of Sweden in the second round. The Swede ousted Lebanon’s Karim Al Alayli 6-1, 6-2.

Seventh seed Al Ghareb of Kuwait battled well but failed to break Rabie Chaki of Morocco who won 6-3, 6-3. Chaki will face Russia’s Dimitry Sitak in the second round pairings. Sitak notched up an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mohammed Medhat of Egypt.

Issam Jallali of Tunisia also produced an excellent display to beat Howe Gregory of the UK 6-1, 6-3. Gregory, ranked 1,228 in the world, was kept at by a determined Jallali to claim the two sets and the match. Jallali takes on sixth seed Karim Maamoum of Egypt in the second round. The Egyptian beat off a strong challenge from Saudi Arabia’s Fahd Al Saad in three sets before clinching a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory.
