Park aiming for Korean double celebration

MANCHESTER - Park Ji-Sung has vowed to make it a South Korean double celebration by helping Manchester United be crowned champions of Europe in Moscow next week.

Park was thrilled as international team-mate Kim Dong-Jin contributed towards Zenit St Petersburg's win in the UEFA Cup final on Wednesday at the home of United's cross-city rivals, Manchester City.

Kim came on in the dying moments as his Russian club defeated Scottish side Rangers 2-0 and now Park wants to taste European glory himself when United face Premier League rivals Chelsea in the Champions League final on Wednesday.

‘I watched Zenit on television and I was very pleased that they won for obvious reasons,’ Park told AFP.

‘Hopefully I can make it a South Korean double. That would be very good.’

Should he play in the Russian capital next week, Park will be taking part in the biggest club match ever to feature a Korean player.

With the 27-year-old having fully recovered from the injury problems which ruined the first half of the season for him, he looks set to start in Moscow, as he did in United's 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic last Sunday.

That win sealed the club's 10th Premier League title under manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the selection of Park reflected the manager's faith in a player who is keeping United legend Ryan Giggs out of the starting line-up.

The Wigan match was watched on television by millions in South Korea and the former PSV Eindhoven player expects the eyes of his nation to be on him again even though it will be the early hours of the morning when the final in Moscow starts.

‘If I play it will be the biggest game of my career,’ Park added. ‘It's the dream of every player to appear in the Champions League final. I won't be feeling the pressure if I play. I will go out and enjoy myself like I always do.

‘We are more confident because we won the league and Chelsea lost the league. It'll be late in Korea when we kick off but most of the Korean people will be able to see the game on television.’

Park was already a huge celebrity in South Korea before arriving at United, but his arrival at Old Trafford three years ago saw his fame soar to new levels.

‘When I go home I always get recognised on the streets,’ he said.

‘Manchester United was really big in Korea before I joined them, but there is even more interest in them now I am there.

‘My parents will be going to Moscow. They have been over to Manchester to see me play and they want to be at the final.’
