The nine-day event, which starts at the Al Ahli sports hall from today (Friday) has attracted some of the top teams in the Middle East. Al Ittihad are in Group A along with hosts UAE, Al Jazeira of Egypt, Lebanon’s Al Hikmah, defending champions Mahram of Iran.
Walid Al Mallahi, chairman of Continental Real Estates, addressing the media at the Fairmont Hotel here yesterday, said it was a great opportunity to sponsor Al Ittihad team. “We were inspired by the direct patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai by sponsoring Al Ittihad.
He said the sponsorship was part of Continental Estate’s commitment towards sports, social and humanitarian activities. “The group is well-known for its support of several sports in the country. It has contributed in supporting athletes participating in sports for the physically challenged and people with special needs.” Al Mallahi expressed his outfit’s delight in supporting Al Ittihad “who have achieved a lot in the sport of basketball.
Basel Hamawi, president of Al Ittihad said they were overwhelmed with the partnership of Continental Real Estate and were pleased to play in the colours of the company. “Al Ittihad are one of the best five basketball clubs in the Arab world. We will do our best to achieve some honours in the tournament to raise the name of Continental Real Estate.
The coach of the side, Mohammed Abu Saada, is optimistic they could do well in the championship despite the presence of some of the best teams in the region. “We finished third the last time we competed. This time we are looking to win the title,” he said.
Abu Saada, a player when they participated last time, said the team would be strengthened with three Americans. David Johnson is one of them, who had played in the NBA and in Spain.
The media conference was also attended by Edmon Watfeh, Belal Beseiso and Khalid Shahin.
