World Billiards gala gets under way

FUJAIRAH — Shaikh Saleh bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Chairman of Industry and Economy Department, yesterday inaugurated the World Billiards professionals Championship.

As many as 64 stars, including eight players from the UAE, are taking part in the eight-day championship, which is held being in Al Bustan indoor hall.

Stars from 30 countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, USA, Europe and Australia are taking part in the championship.

Matches were held after the opening ceremony.

As of now, 32 matches have been held in 8 groups to decide the qualifiers out of 64 competitors.

The organising committee has allotted $120,000 as prize money.

The opening ceremony was attended by Shaikh Mohammed bin Salah Al Sharqi, Tamjeed Abdullah, Vice-President of DAMAS group, the sponsor of the championship, Mohammed Al Salami, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority in Fujairah and number of senior officials.

"DAMAS has offered AED1 million as diamond sponsor in their effort to make the game popular in the country," said Tamjeed Abdullah.

The Championship is being organised by Fujairah International Airport in association with the UAE and International Billiards and Snookers associations.
