Team Emirates, who went through the league stage of the triangular winning both matches, renew their rivalry against a side they beat 11-8 in tonight’s final starting at 6pm.
“The league result is history. All three teams are equal in strength and the team that plays best on the day can go on and win this title. So expect a close game,” said Gonzalo Azumendi, who scored 11 goals in the two league games for Team Emirates.
Bordieu shared the same sentiment, “This is a game where the winner takes all. Our team is much sharper after two games, and I’m hopeful the team will improve further for the final match.
“We played better after that defeat on day two of the competition. Rodolfo (Ducos) caused us some early problems tonight. We had him marked for the rest of the game and then enjoyed a better second half. Obviously we couldn’t have done it without the two national players (Ahmed bin Dasmal and Ahmed Al Nueimi) chipping in with valuable contributions.”
The goal-scoring spree from the two Argentine pros Bordieu and Araya overshadowed fellow pro Rodolfo Ducos’ individual brilliance at the other end on Wednesday’s final league round match.
Ducos scored six of his team’s nine goals with Nasser Al Dhaheri (2) and Nasser Al Shamsi (1) getting into the scoresheet for Ghantoot, who bowed out without a win from two games. Ducos set the polo pitch ablaze by firing the first five goals for his team, who led 2-1 and 4-3 after the first two chukkas. Horse and Course took a one-goal cushion in the next and held that lead until the end.
Horse and Course virtually sealed the game when they extended their lead to three goals midway in the final chukka before two late goals from Dhaheri and Shamsi closed the gap.
Ghantoot’s performance was commendable, as they fielded three national players and one foreign pro whilst the other two teams were composed of two foreign pros and two locals.
