Saudi Arabia executes man for murder

20 June 2006
RIYADH - Saudi Arabia executed on Tuesday a Saudi man convicted of murdering a compatriot.

The execution is the third reported in 2006 in the kingdom, which implements strict Islamic law and usually carries out executions by public beheading with a sword. Eighty six people were put to death in 2005 and 35 in 2004.

Saudi officials have not explained the fall in executions in the first half of this year, which follows criticism from human rights groups over the high rates in previous years.

The Interior Ministry said Saeed Al Shemmari was put to death in Hael for shooting dead a man during a quarrel.

Saudi Arabia executes convicted murderers, rapists and drug traffickers.
