Onion exports suffer due to supply problems
BY A CORRESPONDENT

24 July 2007
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan is experiencing Rs8.29 million weekly losses as onion export has come to halt after the supply chain between Balochistan and Sindh was severely damaged by recent rains.

Due to the damaged supply chain some 800 tonnes of onion could not reach Karachi port on weekly basis to be exported to international markets.

The shortfall might further shoot up with monsoon rains persisting longer than expected, shows statistics of the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Board (PHDEB). The board has also pointed out that Pakistan is unable to exploit the international onion market in the absence of its competitor, India, this year. Pakistan was expected to reap high pay back for its bumper onion crop production as India had not that much surplus production to export this season. But, damage to the supply chain has crippled the export capability of the country.

The country will even be unable to restart normal export on onion during the next one month and would miss the lucrative international market and better prices.
