Qatami joins ‘Plant a Million Trees’ initiative in Dubai

(Wam) / 13 January 2011

DUBAI -- Education Minister Humaid Al Qatami took part today in the environmental drive to plant a million trees in Dubai.

The initiative was launched earlier in November last year by Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for a greener Dubai by planting a Ghaf tree at Dubai Police Academy.

The indigenous Ghaf (Prosopis cineraria) has been an integral part of the UAE’s distinctive desert environment and the civilization that developed here. Ghaf is historically and culturally as valuable as it is ecologically.

In 2007, as part of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) effort entitled Year Of the Tree, the Plant for the Planet project ‘Billion Tree Campaign’ launched with the intent to encourage individuals, communities, organizations, and governments to plant one billion trees worldwide by the end of 2007.
