US 'message’ for Musharraf
From Afzal Khan

12 August 2008
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf met US Ambassador Anne Patterson at the Army House yesterday amid speculation that the beleaguered president is being advised by his American and European friends to avoid confronting the impeachment motion. Musharraf’s spokesman, however, did not confirm the US envoy’s meeting with the president.

Also yesterday, Information Minister Sherry Rehman said that a charge sheet against Musharraf will be ready in a couple of days and the impeachment process would be completed by September 3.

“We have enough votes for the motion to succeed and don’t have to buy votes,” Sherry told reporters here yesterday.

Yesterday was Musharraf’s 65th birthday but no formal function was held. The celebrations were confined to family members and a few close friends.

Meanwhile, Musharraf held another session with his main supporters, PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and cousin Chaudhry Pervez Elahi who once again urged him to fight it out.

Shujaat later told reporters that Musharraf has strongly denied PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari’s allegations that he misappropriated bulk of billion dollar annual US aid for military operation in tribal region.
