Boy & Kris: Together again

APRYLLE LIABRES (Contributor) / 12 July 2007

AFTER BEING temporarily separated when she chose to quit hosting 'The Buzz', Boy Abunda and his good friend Kris Aquino are back in each other’s arms with the premiere of their new daytime TV talk show, 'Boy and Kris', on ABS-CBN.

The show’s first week tackled the subject of relationships. The first episode featured three parent and child tandems: Judy Ann Santos and her mommy Carol, Luis Manzano and his father, actor and game show host Edu; and Ara Mina and her mother Frances Marie, a former beauty queen who showed that good looks really do run in the family.

Boy says he and Kris have always wanted to do a show of this format. They first talked about it years ago. “We told ourselves, we should be doing a Mel and Jay-type show. It had always been in our minds [since then].”

Boy and Kris first met when Kris was still a college student at the Ateneo. She was just starting her showbiz career then, and her manager Girlie Rodis — known in the industry simply as “GR” — introduced her to Boy, who was working as a publicist. His PR outfit, Backroom, handled some of the entertainment industry’s biggest stars, including Zsa Zsa Padilla and Martin Nievera. “GR wanted him to handle my publicity,” recalls Kris.

That was 18 years ago. Onscreen, their tandem is now 12 years old (and counting)—which, as Kris pointed out, “is as old as [my son] Josh.”

With two hosts both known for being articulate and chatty, the question of who will outtalk whom on Boy and Kris would normally be an issue. But their friendship has transcended that. “I don’t think we still worry about that,” argues Boy. “I know when to stop talking. The past few years together also taught us the value of listening, not just to our guests, but to each other. Kris and I are not in competition with each other. Our level of comfort with each other is such that we can discuss things passionately without getting personal.”

Kris agrees. “What we have goes beyond that. He [Boy] is the closest talaga to me apart from my immediate family. We tell each other things that we can’t even tell our own families sometimes. It’s a very spiritual friendship at this point.”

Boy and Kris marks Kris’ second show since she returned to work as host of Kapamilya Deal or No Deal. She will be seen in a third show, Weekend With Kris, a lifestyle show set to premiere in the second week of August.

Fans of Boy and Kris’ onscreen tandem will have to content themselves with the show, since Kris is definitely not returning to The Buzz. “Tita Susan [Roces] told me that by giving up The Buzz, I’m giving my family the chance to live a quiet life,” says Kris.
