ABU DHABI - President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has received the plaque of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The plaque is awarded in recognition of his role in supporting the organisation’s activities in the field of international humanitarian work and in appreciation of the role of the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Charity Foundation in providing assistance to refugees in Pakistan.

The presentation was made while Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash received at his office this morning, Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The High Commissioner asserted during the meeting that the noble gesture of His Highness covered about 200,000 families in Pakistan and had the greatest impact in addressing the humanitarian tragedy that affected the innocent women, children and the elderly. He hailed the continuous support of the UAE and its President to UNHCR.

Dr Anwar Gargash said this presentation comes in recognition of the great humanitarian role of HH President, whether in Pakistan or other parts of the world and that we take pride in this role, which reinforces the status of the UAE on the international level.

The Minister stressed the importance of the pioneering role played by the UAE in relief operations, noting that in the world there are over 16 million refugees, the two-thirds of whom are Muslims.

“This adds a lot to our credit and the appreciation accorded to our President is only a part of a greater recognition of the efforts of His Highness in the area of humanitarian assistance”, Gargash said noting the role of Khalifa Bin Zayed Foundation, which made several achievements during a short span of time, thanks to the directives of the President.
