MANAMA — A total of 182 candidates, including three women, will contest for 39 seats in the forthcoming municipal elections in Bahrain. One candidate, Isa Yousif Al Dossary, won on Friday unopposed after his opponent withdrew from the race.Two women are contesting municipal polls from Muharraq and one from the Northern Governorate, while the other three districts lack any women candidate.
Upon the conclusion on Friday of the five-day registration process for the municipal election, the Executive Election Panel announced that Muharraq governorate has the highest number of candidates with 53 in the race, while the southern governorate has the lowest number as 19 candidates are in the contest.
In the 2006 municipal election, 171 candidates took part in the contest, while it was around 300 in the 2002 election. Municipal and parliamentary elections will be held on October 23.
