It says the quake registered magnitude 6.0, while the U.S. Geological Survey put it at 5.7.
The earthquake struck at 5:32 p.m. (0932 GMT) Thursday and was centered in rural Nantou county, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of the capital, Taipei.
Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan but most are minor and cause little or no damage.
However, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.
