Parking a Problem as Prepaid Cards Hard to Come by in Dubai

Joy Sengupta / 16 September 2008

DUBAI — For almost a month now, motorists in the emirate are getting bogged down by the non-availability of pre-paid parking cards issued by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

While motorists scout around for these cards in vain at groceries and supermarkets, the distributors said the RTA had stopped issuing them, without giving any reason.

As a result of this, many people have to hunt for coins to obtain parking tickets from pre-paid parking machines.

“We have not been getting parking cards from the distributors for nearly a month now. But people keep coming to us asking for them. We too have tried to ascertain the reason for the unavailability of the cards but to no avail,” said Abu Baker, manager of Al Madina Supermarket in Bur Dubai.

The pre-paid cards are of Dh30, Dh50 and Dh100 denominations. Abu Baker, an official of Al Noor General Trading, one of the distributors of these cards, said: For a month now, we have not got any supplies of these cards from the RTA.” For the motorists, it means a messy situation. “With the parking cards not available, we have to always make sure we carry coins. Last week, I parked my car in Bur Dubai and then went to get some coins to buy the parking ticket. I came back to my car only to find that I had already been fined. This is very frustrating,” said Mohammed Khatir, a motorist.

“Many a time we forget to carry coins. The RTA should ensure the availability of these cards at the earliest,” said Kamran Hussain, another Dubai resident.

Meanwhile, informed sources said the RTA is changing the card design and that the new cards will be released just after Eid.

Attempts to get comments on the matter from senior RTA officials did not pan out, but a representative at the RTA office in Rashidiya said: “The cards are out of stock at the moment. But we’ll start issuing them by the end of this month.”
