Price tags attached to clothes raise eyebrows
By Mohsen Rashid

17 February 2006
DUBAI — A well-known chain of ready-made clothes shops, which has branches at malls all over the UAE, has withdrawn objectionable price tags from a set of Spanish garments, as they carried obscene depictions alongside sacred Islamic symbols.

Customers noticed a juxtaposition of the image of what looked like a mosque with love signs and suggestive comments.

According to a female customer, the comments described the building as a place where lovers meet. Three hearts with arrows flying into them from the direction of the building were also shown.

Around the picture were written suggestive statements such as: "We slept here," "Look! Here is where we are. Wonderful! Isn't it?," and a third one, "Well! Lots of kisses!!". A XXX sign was also seen.

When customers brought it to the attention of the shop staff, the matter was immediately attended to. The tags were quickly removed and the shop regretted the error.

Kasinderaw, a saleswoman at one of the branches of the shopping chain, in City Centre, Dubai, explained that it was an unintended mistake. "The goods were imported from Spain a week ago. The moment the error was noticed, the product was removed from the shelves," she clarified.

"We discussed the matter with the exporter, who also confirmed that it was a mistake. He assured us it was not meant in any way to offend the sensibilities of the religion of Islam," Kasinderaw explained.
