UAE to observe anti-drugs day
(Wam)

26 June 2005
ABU DHABI — The UAE will mark the World Anti-Drugs Day, being observed worldwide today.

The UAE Ministry of Interior will mark the event in a celebration to be held at Ras Al Khaimah Cultural Centre. The celebration will be held under the patronage of Major-General Saif Abdullah Al Shafaar, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.

In a statement on the occasion, Brigadier Shaikh Talib bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Director-General of Ras Al Khaimah Police and Head of the Anti-Narcotic Committee at the ministry, said the drug issue is a worldwide menace that requires concerted efforts.

He said the fight against drugs was no easy task as traffickers have entrenched themselves financially and could evade capture. He pointed out, however, that fight should continue so as to put an end to the socio-economic consequences of the drug addiction.

Meanwhile, Emirates Post has issued a postal stamp featuring hazards of drugs. The move is part of an awareness campaign to enlighten the public about the dangers posed by drugs to societies.
