SHARJAH — With the construction work of the highway connecting Al Nahda area to Emirates Road almost nearing completion, Sharjah residents and visitors can finally heave a sigh of relief from the endless traffic jams witnessed daily on the main roads connecting the emirates of Dubai and Sharjah.

Dr Engineer Obaid Al Tunaiji, Director-General of the Sharjah Town Planning and Survey Directorate (STPSD), told Khaleej Times that the new road will contribute to lessening the traffic jams which have long been an unpleasant phenomenon facing the people daily.

The new highway will start through a bridge located at Al Khan Road and connect Al Nahda area with Emirates Road and Sharjah Ring Road.

Dr Al Tunaiji said that in order to ensure a smooth non-stop traffic flow from Al Ithihad Road to Al Wahda Road, the Al Khan bridge and King Faisal bridge will be demolished.

Responding to a question regarding the endless unbearable traffic jams witnessed every morning during the rush hours particularly on the Al Khan signal (near Qanat Al Qasba), he said: "Due to our commitment to completing all the necessary work at the highway, we have diverted the traffic to this particular signal where connection work is accomplished. This is aimed at studying the outcome of the road diversion and to see whether they contribute to curbing the traffic jams or not.”
