Dubai Men’s College campus almost ready
(By a staff reporter)

13 May 2004
DUBAI - Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), accompanied by Qassim Sultan, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer, Minister of Communications, and other local dignitaries, on Wednesday toured the new state-of-the-art Dubai Men's College (DMC) campus located in the upcoming University City in Al Ruwaiyyah.

The Dh110 million DMC campus built on land donated by the Dubai Government, under the supervision of the Dubai Municipality, is almost complete and ready to welcome students in the new academic year in September 2004. Located on 402,000 square metres of land, the campus, which has several building blocks including those for administration, teaching staff, library, sports facilities, and services, can accomodate up to 2,000 students.

Construction of the new campus commenced in mid-2002 and was completed in January this year. Currently, landscaping of the campus and the building of interiors is underway.

In addition to its administrative block, a teaching block, and a library, the Higher Colleges of Technology's DMC campus houses one of the best sports facilities for the students including an Olympic-size swimming pool, a gymnasium, a football ground, tennis and basketball courts. In addition, the new campus houses a multi-purpose hall which can accomodate around 800 people.

Speaking to reporters after the tour, Shaikh Nahyan expressed his gratitude to the Dubai Rulers for providing the HCT institution with all its support and best of construction technology. He thanked them for their support in recognising educational institutions offering quality education to be the best investments for the progress of any country.

He also thanked the Dubai Municipality and other local departments for providing superior and high quality of construction, and building an infrastructure of the highest international standards.

Commenting on the reasons for the delay in the project which was earlier slated to open in September 2003, he said, "the delay was not for financial reasons. A project of this magnitude required to be equipped with additional facilities to provide the best to our students, thus resulting in a slight delay."

"However, I am glad that the HCT institution is finally ready. We will now start work on the next project, which is the Zayed University campus in the University City," Shaikh Nahyan said.

The University City, located in Al Ruwaiyyah on the Dubai-Al Ain Road, is expected to house over 20 universities and higher educational institutions. The municipality has already completed the Dh110 million first phase of University City Road network, which began in June 2002, and involved a 32-km road network which serves the city and connects several major roads and areas of the emirate.
