The resolution calls for a nuclear-free Middle East.

In a statement to the third session of the preparatory committee for the 2005 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference here today, UAE's permanent representative to the UN, Abdul Aziz Nasser Al Shamsi, stressed the responsibility of the state parties to the treaty, especially nuclear-weapons possessing states, to exert all efforts to compel Israel to "accede unconditionally to the NPT and comply with the provisions on the Middle East resolution, including dismantling of all its military nuclear facilities and subjecting them to the safeguard of the IAEA, similar to other countries in the region."

He said the UAE is concerned about the international leniency towards Israel's refusal to accede to the NPT and it’s being the sole nuclear weapons possessing state in the region.

He reaffirmed that dealing with the present nuclear threat and enforcing non-proliferation, should be approached on the principles of justice, transparency and equality.

This will ensure the universality of the NPT and protect the world from the possibility of catastrophic nuclear confrontations," the UAE senior diplomat made it clear.

"Its (Israel's) nuclear reactors and dangerous arsenals perpetuate the present tension in the region created by its occupation of the Arab and Palestinian territories. We join the Arab countries and all other peace-loving countries that reject such nuclear-weapons exceptional of Israel, which if not corrected will pose a threat to the regional and international peace and security, and will lead to a human and regional disaster," opined Al Shamsi.
