Militants ambush Kashmir politician’s motorcade; bodyguard killed

SRINAGAR, India - Suspected rebels ambushed the motorcade of a former speaker of the Jammu-Kashmir state legislature on Monday, killing his bodyguard and injuring three other people, police said.

Ali Mohammad Naik, the former speaker of Indian-controlled Kashmir’s legislature was wounded when guerrillas opened fire on his car in Tral, a small town about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, said local police superintendent G.M. Dar.

One of his bodyguards was killed in the attack and two others were wounded, Dar said.
