(Reuters)

24 November 2009
Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir started sedately before shifting gears to launch India to a strong position by lunch on the opening day of the second Test in Kanpur.

Sri Lanka managed to keep the scoring rate down with the new ball but things went pear-shaped for them after the spinners were introduced, with Sehwag and Gambhir looting 73 runs off nine overs.

India skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka.

Brief scores: India 131-0 (G. Gambhir 59 not out, V. Sehwag 70 not out) v Sri Lanka

India made two changes from the high-scoring draw in the first test in Ahmedabad, dropping paceman Ishant Sharma and leg spinner Amit Mishra and bringing in Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and handing left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha his test debut.

Sri Lanka brought back leg spinner Ajantha Mendis, including him as the third spinner in place of the injured new ball bowler Dhammika Prasad.
