ICC permits Ganguly to play pending appeal decision

14 April 2005
NEW DELHI - The International Cricket Council (ICC) has permitted Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to play pending resolution of his appeal against a six-match ban on him for his team’s slow over rate in a recent match against Pakistan, PTI news agency reported.

“Mr. Ganguly is permitted to play pending the resolution of any appeal,” said an ICC statement issued in London. The statement confirmed that Ganguly had appealed against the suspension imposed by match referee Chris Broad after the fourth one-day international against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

The ICC will appoint within 48 hours a member of its Code of Conduct Commission as an appeals commissioner to hear this appeal, the statement said. The commissioner, who has the power to increase or decrease the penalty imposed or overturn the match referee’s decision, will give his verdict in seven days, the statement said.
