US, Oman reach free trade agreement
(AP)

3 October 2005
WASHINGTON - The United States and Oman have successfully completed negotiations on a free trade agreement that would eliminate virtually all trade barriers between the two countries, a senior US trade official said on Monday.

US Trade Representative Rob Portman and Maqbool bin Ali, Oman’s minister of trade and industry, were to announce later Monday that their two nations had resolved all issues and were able to complete the talks, according to a US trade official who demanded anonymity until the agreement was formally announced by both countries.

The agreement will not go into effect until it has been approved by Congress under a procedure known as trade promotion authority, which requires that both the House and the Senate approve the deal without amendments.
