Arab League team heads for Baghdad

6 November 2005
CAIRO — The Arab League team preparing the ground for an Iraqi national reconciliation conference headed for Baghdad yesterday for new consultations, sources at the pan-Arab body said.

The seven-man team headed by Algerian Ahmed Ben Helli is expected to hold fresh talks aimed at defusing sectarian tensions in the war-torn country.

A wider preparatory meeting is expected to be held in mid-November in Cairo.

Arab League chief Amr Moussa travelled to Iraq on October 20 to promote the initiative and discuss it with the country’s leaders.

It was his first visit to Iraq since the March 2003 US-led invasion and symbolised a decision by the 22-member body to be more actively involved in Iraq, where confessional strife threatens to precipitate civil war.
