Israeli animal rescuers round up Gaza strays

TEL AVIV - Animal rescuers have salvaged dozens of abandoned pets and stray animals from evacuated Israeli settlements in Gaza in a race against time before bulldozers smash their homes into dust, activists said on Wednesday.

More than a hundred assorted animals, including dogs, cats, chickens, goats, geese, parakeets, ducks and even an iguana have been saved from former Jewish enclaves in the Gaza Strip, Israel’s animal charity Hakol Chai said.

Although some animals have died under the punishing sun without water or food, Hakol Chai lobbyist Tali Lavie said she was confident that teams of volunteers had rescued as many pets as possible.

“Time is running out because after the bulldozers ruin the houses, it is impossible to bring anything out. I think today will be the last day we have in the Gaza Strip,” she said.

“There was one little kitten, three weeks old who had just opened its eyes. It had suffered so much, it was very, very hard,” said Lavie.
