DUBAI/DOHA — The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry would be forced to impose a boycott on all Danish and Norwegian products if the Federation of GCC Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Damman, Saudi Arabia agrees to coordinate boycott action regionally.

The Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) has forwarded letters to the Federation asking it to do so. Speaking about the turn of events to Khaleej Times yesterday, the DCCI's director-general, Abdul Rahman G Al Mutaiwee said: "Because the Federation is a collective body we would have to go with its decision." At the time of speaking, however, he had not yet received any notification from the Federation on what action would be taken.

The Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) initiated the motion, after deciding to temporarily suspend hosting of any trade mission from either Denmark or Norway following the publication in both countries of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

QCCI has also urged foreign companies to stop dealing in goods and services from two countries and nationals and expatriates in Qatar to boycott Danish and Norwegian products. Most retailers in Qatar have voluntarily withdrawn Danish products from sale.

A QCCI statement said: “The Chamber condemns the cartoons and deplores attempts to insult Islam or any other religion under the pretext of freedom of expression". It also said it expressed solidarity with “the people on the streets in Qatar and the rest of the Islamic world and their feelings”.
