We will not suffer the fate of Windies: Ponting
(Cricket News)

3 November 2004
MUMBAI — Australian captain Ricky Ponting is back in the side which has just won their first series in India in 35 years and promises his champion team wouldn’t suffer the fate the all-conquering West Indians of the 70s and 80s have endured in recent times.

“I don’t think we can be compared with West Indies. The basis of this claim is that our infrastructure is tough and intense. There are many more Michael Clarkes waiting in the wings,” said Ponting.

“Cricket Australia has been working on kids so it wouldn’t suffer like the West Indies.”

Complimenting Adam Gilchrist for almost a perfect job he has done in the series, Ponting said he couldn’t help comment on his two predecessors who taught him a great deal about the nuances of captaincy.

“It is difficult to step into (Steve) Waugh’s shoes. He can’t be compared. I have learnt a lot from Waugh. I have learnt how to keep your head cool at the time of crisis.”

“From Mark Taylor too, I have learnt how to place a field, change a bowler.

“I must compliment Gilchrist too. He has done almost a perfect job.”

Ponting has instructed Clarke to give attention on his fielding and rated Jonty Rhodes and Herschelle Gibbs as the two best he has seen in his career.

Ponting is nicknamed ‘Punter’ and admits he still loves punting and has been following the races in Melbourne.

He also expressed his admiration for Indian girls who he said were very beautiful.

“Indian girls are very beautiful. But before you jump to any conclusion, let me tell you I have been married for nine years.”
