Nuaimi carries UAE hopes

ABU DHABI - Mohammed Al Nuaimi was the sole survivor of the six UAE qualifiers in the opening day of the ITF Boys Under 18 ranking tournament here at Al Ghazal Golf Club courts yesterday.

The fifth seed overcame Syrian Fadi Marwan 6-4 6-1 to move into the last 16 from a full card of matches. He will encounter Jordanian Mohammed Al Issawi, who got the better of Arthur Tafalla of the Philippines, in the next round from the bottom half of the draw.

The rest of the seven seeds had no problems in clearing the opening hurdle. The top and bottom seeds from Kuwait, Abdulla Magdas and Ahmad Rabea made short work on Rusian Nikita Dudar and UAE's Abdullah Al Hassani 6-2 6-1 and 6-2 6-0 respectively.

Third seeded Catalin Buzatu raced past host nation's Faisal Bastaki 6-0 6-1 and fourth seeded Anas Fattar of Morocco crushed Russian Dmitry Frumkin 6-1 6-1.

The rest of the seeded players Arnav Jain, Mark Silva, both from India and Libyan Bassam Beidas from the US too had comfortable passages into the last 16.

Jain trounced Syrian Sami Al Saadi 6-0 6-0, Silva overcame Abdullah Qasem 6-0 3-6 6-3 and Beidas downed Aumir Ahmad 6-1 6-1.

The six-day long championship is sponsored by Abu Dhabi International Airport and Electro Mechanical Company.
