Godolphin bring home trophy at fourth attempt
By A Correspondent

24 January 2004
DUBAI - Godolphin, led by their captain John Carroll, ended a four-year drought when winning the Godolphin Golf Challenge at Nad Al Sheba Golf Club on Tuesday 20th January.

Godolphin, who sponsor the event, has been soundly beaten by the Dubai Team since the competition was inaugurated in 2000.

It was a team event, one from the Godolphin Stables and one from the remaining stables in Dubai.

The challenge was open to all golfers who are employees of Godolphin or Zabeel Racing Office and Emirates Racing Association.

Jockey John Carroll captained the Godolphin team; with UK jockey Willie Supple leading the Dubai Stables team.

The competition was a two-ball Texas Scramble Stableford and the format was twenty-six pairings from both teams.

The challenge again was very competitive with both teams providing great golf and sportsmanship but in the end it was Carroll who lifted the Godolphin perpetual trophy, with the Godolphin team winning by 7 1/2 to 5 1/2 points.

The prize for the best pair went to Godolphin's Aiden Kenna and Raymond Dorans who scored an impressive 45 points.

There were many other prizes on offer and the results of the challenge are listed below.

Due to a record number of entries received, there was once again a reserve competition which was won by Larry Coleman from Red stables and Pat Kelly from the International stables, again scoring a brilliant 44 points.

The organisers of the event were pleased to extend an invitation to UK trainers Ben Hanbury and Geoff Wragg, both of whom are enjoying a visit to Dubai.

A special mention must go to last year's champion jockey Gary Hind.

Although Gary failed to win his match, his antics on the course were a source of entertainment for all.

The tournament was a complete success with calm playing conditions and everybody there to enjoy themselves.

Godolphin will be hoping to retain the trophy next year but their previous form suggests that the odds are against them.

Godolphin put on record thanking Montgomerie Golf Club, Emirates Golf Club, Arabian Ranches Golf Club and, in particular, Nad Al Sheba Golf Club for their assistance with organising the event.
