Serving up sushi can be a bit of a hit and miss - people either love it or hate it. But there's a solution to that, and interestingly, it's discovered by one of the newcomers to Dubai's restaurant scene. Moshi (the name, in case you haven't already guessed, is an amalgamation of momo and sushi) is a little casual diner that serves up wacky Japanese-Indo fusion at wallet-friendly prices. It may have started only eight months ago but it already has two outlets in Dubai, and a pretty massive fan following. Case in point: we arrived on a weekday evening to find their Oud Mehta outlet so packed that there was a line to get in. This might have to do with the fact that that they recently launched their summer menu, so we couldn't blame the crowd's enthusiasm.
The interior is small and in true Japanese style, minimalistic. Now Moshi offers up some Japanese and Nepalese delights, often with Arab or Indian influences so don't be surprised to see things like Falafel Nigiri and Cheesy Chips Oman Maki Rolls mingling with traditional options like Nepalese Thukpa Soup and Japanese Unagi on the menu. It's their recent summer menu that stole the show this time, and that's how we found ourselves snacking on Hot Dog Maki Rolls and Chicken Chips Oman Rolls. One of my favourites was their Zaater Labneh Maki (Dh25), an interesting Arab twist: rice rolls coated in zaater and stuffed with cucumber. Refreshing, and great for vegetarians.
Their flamin' Cheetos Maki Rolls and Volcano Rolls added a touch of spice to the menu while a favourite amongst the customers was the Dhokla Maki (Dh24), their version of the famous Gujrati snack made from rice and split chickpeas. Don't leave without trying their Sushi Burger (Dh37) which features rice buns holding together chicken and lettuce. Warning: it does get messy! Dessert saw us tucking into Nutella Maki Rolls - crepes shaped like rolls with Nutella poured all over them - to end our evening in a true Japanese fusion style.
Few things bring people together like food, and Japanese-Indo-Arab-Nepalese fusion is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, especially in this region. Here's hoping Moshi never stops innovating - and maybe in-spires others in the process.
