Sharjah police is making a strong move to curb road menace, planning tough measures against speeding and reckless drivers who cause fatal accidents.
The action comes in the recent wake of increasing runover accidents that were fatal, killing other, blameless road users.
The police is working on introducing strong procedures against those who cause serious accidents leading to death and loss of property, from failing to follow traffic laws and road rules, said Col. Arif Al Sherif, Deputy Director of Sharjah Police's central operations, at the Sharjah Police Ramadan Majlis held on Monday at Mugaider district.
Driving records of reckless drivers and those who caused deaths will be checked, and the new, stricter penalities would include revoking the driver's licence permanently, and doubling the vehicles' confiscation periods.
Lt Col Ahmad Al Naour, Deputy Director of Traffic and Patrol Department, said the police had already kickstarted massive efforts to reduce bad accidents, by spreading awareness and issuing fines to pedestrians and jaywalkers who don't use the zebra crossings or footbridges to cross the road.
